Restorative Dental Treatments
White fillings
Many people will need a filling at some point in their life. Gone are the days of obvious, metal amalgam fillings. These days it is possible to repair teeth with tooth decay with a tooth-coloured or white composite material, which is strong, durable and natural looking. It is also possible to replace old metal amalgam fillings with white ones. Your dentist will remove any decay before carefully placing a filling that is matched closely to your natural tooth colour.
Root canal treatments
Root canal treatments, also known as endodontics, is an area of special interest for our principal dentist, Dr Dillon Chan. It is needed when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected. The first symptom is often tooth pain, and left untreated an abscess can develop. Without treatment, you could lose your tooth; the aim of a root canal treatment is to save the damaged tooth. It is a skilled and time-consuming process, which usually requires at least two visits to the clinic. Your dentist will carefully clean and fill the root canal, and may recommend strengthening the tooth by adding a crown when treatment is complete.
Inlays/onlays
Inlays and onlays are used to restore cracked teeth or mildly decayed back teeth. They can be made of tooth-coloured composite resin or porcelain, so they are discreet. Inlays sit inside a hole in the broken tooth and onlays build up the tooth’s shape by sitting on top.
Crowns
Crowns are artificial coverings for damaged or weakened teeth. They can be made of tooth-coloured porcelain or gold, and restore strength to teeth that have been damaged by decay or injury, or have been weakened by treatments such as root canal treatment. Crowns can also be used to support bridges or dentures.
Veneers
Dental veneers are thin slivers of porcelain that are placed over the top of the front teeth to hide minor imperfections, such as small cracks, chips or stains. They can also be used to disguise small gaps or minor tooth misalignment, and are similar to false fingernails in concept. Minimal preparation is needed of your teeth, meaning they remain strong and healthy. Veneers are closely matched to the natural colour of your teeth, and are attached using a strong bonding material.
Jaw pain
Many people do not realise their dentist can help with jaw pain. A lot of jaw problems are caused by mild jaw misalignment or by tooth grinding (bruxism), which can often be corrected with special mouth guards and lifestyle changes, such as relaxation techniques to avoid stress, massage and stretching exercises. Your dentist will determine the cause of your jaw paint and recommend appropriate treatment.
